Technical Suffixes: 화, 성, 적, 률/율, 도, 량/양

The reader can decode formal and technical Korean by recognizing suffixes that build process nouns, property nouns, adjectival modifiers, rates, degrees, and quantities.

Article body

Formal Korean becomes much easier when you recognize its suffixes. , , , 률/율, , and 량/양 turn ordinary-looking roots into abstract, technical, policy, academic, and product-language terms. These suffixes are high-yield because they tell you what kind of concept you are reading before you know every word.

often marks transformation, conversion, or becoming: 민주화, 산업화, 디지털화, 자동화, 세계화, 상용화. Do not translate every 화 word mechanically as “-ization,” but that is often a useful first clue. In policy and business Korean, 화 words pair with verbs such as 추진하다, 가속화하다, 실현하다, 완료하다, and 본격화되다. A phrase such as 디지털 전환을 가속화하다 belongs to institutional strategy language, not casual conversation.

creates quality, property, tendency, or abstract state: 안정성, 가능성, 필요성, 위험성, 효율성, 전문성. It often asks “what property does this thing have?” In product copy, 안정성 and 편의성 praise a product. In academic writing, 관련성 or 유의성 may name a measured relationship. In policy writing, 필요성 justifies action.

makes modifier-like words that often correspond to “-al,” “-ic,” “-ive,” or no direct English suffix: 공공적, 경제적, 사회적, 정치적, 기술적, 법적. It can attach to Sino-Korean roots and behave before nouns with -인: 경제적인 선택, 사회적 문제, 법적 책임. Learners should not assume that 적 always means “enemy-like” because 적 can also be the Hanja-derived suffix 的.

률/율 marks rate or ratio, and Korean spelling alternates by environment and convention: 확률, 비율, 효율, 합격률, 성장률. The learner-facing point is not to memorize spelling theory first; it is to see the word as a metric. When you see 실업률, 성장률, or 전환율, expect numbers, comparison, and reporting.

often marks degree, level, or intensity: 온도, 강도, 밀도, 난이도, 만족도. 량/양 marks quantity or amount: 생산량, 사용량, 수출량, 교통량, 업무량. These words frequently appear in reports, dashboards, product specs, science writing, and public policy.

Guided reading

자동화 도입으로 생산량은 증가했지만, 초기 안정성 검증이 필요하다.

This sentence is built from suffix logic:

  • 자동화: process/technology transformation
  • 생산량: quantity/output
  • 안정성: property to be verified
  • 필요하다: necessity frame

Even if a learner does not know every domain detail, suffixes reveal the sentence architecture.

Learner traps

Do not overtranslate suffixes. 전문성 is not always “professionalness”; it may be expertise, professional competence, or specialization depending on context. 경제적 can mean economic, economical, or financial depending on noun and source. Do not assume always means modernization or ideology; it can be technical and neutral. Do not ignore spelling alternations like 확률/비율; they are part of standard written Korean.

Reusable workflow

  1. Remove the suffix and identify the base.
  2. Name the suffix function: process, property, modifier, rate, degree, quantity.
  3. Check the source domain.
  4. Collect two collocations.
  5. Create related word-family cards: 안정성, 안정적, 안정화; 효율, 효율성, 효율적.

Additional practice and repair

Technical suffixes require sharper remediation because they are high-yield and high-risk. Learners see -화, -성, -적, -률/율, -도, and -량/양 everywhere, then start manufacturing words that sound plausible but are not standard or not idiomatic.

Remediation diagnostic

SuffixFunctionGood learner questionCommon error
-화process/transformation“What is being made into what?”translating every case as “-ization” mechanically
-성property/quality“What quality is being evaluated?”using it with bases that do not form natural Korean terms
-적adjectival/relational“Does this modify a noun or behave adverbially with -으로?”using -적 as a universal formalizer
-률/율rate/ratio“Which spelling is standard for this word?”guessing spelling without dictionary check
-도degree/level“What is being measured?”confusing with place suffix 도 or conjunction 도
-량/양quantity/amount“Is this a technical measured amount or ordinary amount?”using 생산양 instead of 생산량-type technical forms

Before/after repair

Weak learner sentence:

이 앱은 편리성이 좋아요.

Better options:

이 앱은 편리해요. 이 앱은 사용성이 좋아요. 이 앱은 사용 편의성이 높아요.

The repair depends on genre. A casual review wants 편리해요. Product/UX language may use 사용성 or 편의성.

Weak learner sentence:

한국어를 국제화적으로 공부해요.

Better:

국제적인 환경에서 한국어를 공부해요. 한국어 교육의 국제화가 빠르게 진행되고 있어요.

Spelling and dictionary guardrail

The article should explicitly tell learners not to generate 률/율 and 량/양 words by memory alone. These are partly regular but lexicalized enough that serious learners should verify common terms in a dictionary. Good cards should store the full word: 비율, 합격률, 생산량, 사용량, 분량, not just the suffix rule.

The suffix-family tool should include a “plausible but unconfirmed” warning. When a learner creates a new suffix word, the interface should ask for a dictionary example or corpus example before the card is accepted into an active deck.

Suggested interactive/tool module

Build a suffix-family generator. A learner enters 안정, 효율, 경제, or 자동, and the tool shows possible forms with example sentences, register labels, and warnings about unnatural combinations.
