How Inkuntri handles study data and supporting services.

This page describes what Inkuntri stores on device, what optional permissions it uses, what remote services it talks to, and how the app's remote control plane fits into that picture.

2. Overview

Inkuntri is a language-learning app for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. It uses lightweight sessions, notifications, optional Apple Watch support, Lock Screen surfaces, pronunciation playback, review tools, badges, optional custom item import, and an optional paid subscription.

We try to collect as little personal information as practical while still operating the app and its supporting services.

3. Information Stored On Your Device

Inkuntri stores study data locally on your device. This may include:

  • Session Setups
  • Saved Decks
  • generated session decks
  • learning progress and session history
  • user-added custom items
  • badge progress and earned-badge state
  • app preferences
  • notification, Lock Screen, and Apple Watch preferences
  • a locally generated random device identifier used by the app

4. Information You May Choose to Add

You may choose to add your own learning items by pasting text, typing entries manually, or importing text from a photo.

Any custom items you save are stored locally on your device as part of your study library.

5. Permissions We Request

  • Notifications: used so active study sessions can continue when the app is in the background.
  • Camera: used only if you choose the photo-based item import flow.
  • Photo Library: used only if you choose to import text from an image.

You can decline these permissions and continue using the rest of the app.

6. Photo Text Extraction

When you import text from a photo, Inkuntri uses Apple's on-device Vision framework to recognize text. In the current version, that OCR process runs locally on your device.

7. Lock Screen Widgets, Live Activities, and Shared App Storage

If you use Inkuntri's Lock Screen widget or Live Activity features, the app stores a small study snapshot in an Apple app-group container shared between the main app and its widget extension.

That snapshot may include sticking-point or session-preview information such as subject name, side 1 text, pronunciation or translation text when needed for the widget experience, and simple progress counts.

This data stays on your device and is used so the widget and Live Activity surfaces can render without a separate account backend.

8. Network Requests and Third-Party Services

Inkuntri uses limited network requests for certain media and control-plane features.

  • Pronunciation audio: the app may fetch a pronunciation manifest and pronunciation audio files from a developer-controlled DigitalOcean Spaces endpoint.
  • Character stroke order: the app loads Hanzi Writer resources and stroke data through jsDelivr inside an in-app web view.
  • Remote configuration and messaging: the app includes a developer-operated control plane hosted at https://escapespeed.net.

9. Remote Configuration and Optional Usage Event Collection

The control plane may deliver feature flags, content visibility and pack configuration, behavior defaults, notification copy, announcement cards, and offer or paywall copy.

When the app refreshes remote configuration, the control service may receive the app name and environment, app version, platform, locale, timezone, a locally generated random device identifier, and subscription-access state flags.

When telemetry is enabled in the active app configuration, the app may also send a small set of product-usage events such as app open, app backgrounded, session start, and session end, along with limited event context like platform, app version, locale, timezone, country or region, session identifiers, locally generated deck or lesson identifiers, subject key, session mode, and event timing.

We use this information to operate remote configuration, understand app behavior at a product level, and improve the app. We do not use it for third-party advertising.

10. Badge Sharing

Inkuntri can generate share cards for earned badges.

  • the share card image is rendered locally on your device
  • the app does not automatically post the share card anywhere
  • the image and share text are only sent if you choose a destination through the platform share sheet

Once you share content to another app or service, that destination's own privacy policy applies.

11. Subscriptions and Payments

Inkuntri may offer an optional auto-renewable subscription through Apple's App Store billing system.

  • purchases are processed by Apple, not directly by us
  • we do not receive your full payment card number or full billing details
  • the app may read local StoreKit transaction or entitlement state on your device to determine whether subscription access is active
  • the current version does not require a separate Inkuntri username or sign-in to use the subscription

12. What We Do Not Currently Offer

  • a required account sign-in system
  • in-app advertising
  • a third-party advertising SDK
  • social networking features

13. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal information.

In the current version, the app's direct third-party or hosted-service interactions are limited to Apple, the pronunciation-audio hosting path, the stroke-order CDN, and the developer-operated control-plane service.

14. Data Retention

Study data stored by the app remains on your device until you delete it in the app, reset learning data in the app, or uninstall the app.

Control-plane caches and queued telemetry are stored locally on the device until refreshed, sent, removed by the app, or deleted with the app. Remote service providers and the developer-operated control service may retain standard operational logs and received event data according to their own retention practices.

15. Your Choices

  • decline notification permission
  • decline camera or photo-library permission
  • avoid using photo-based import
  • avoid using Lock Screen widgets or Live Activities
  • avoid sharing badge cards
  • avoid purchasing the subscription and remain on the free tier
  • cancel your subscription through Apple's subscription management tools
  • delete custom items you added
  • reset your learning data in the app
  • uninstall the app

16. Children's Privacy

Inkuntri is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children through an account system in the current version.

17. International Users

If you use Inkuntri outside the United States, please understand that app resources and supporting services may be operated from other jurisdictions.

18. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the last-updated date at the top of this page.
