The Vocabulary of Korean Requests by Burden

The reader can shape Korean requests by burden, relationship, time pressure, and refusal space instead of merely adding 요.

Article body

Korean request grammar is not just politeness endings. A request must manage burden. Asking for a napkin, asking someone to review a report, asking for a deadline extension, and asking for interdepartmental cooperation require different vocabulary.

주세요 is direct and useful for ordinary service or object requests: 물 한 잔 주세요, 영수증 주세요. It can be polite enough in service settings, but it becomes too blunt for heavy favors.

부탁드려요 / 부탁드립니다 adds a favor frame. It acknowledges that the listener is being asked to do something. “확인 부탁드립니다” is common in workplace messages. It can become mechanical if overused, but it remains a core phrase.

가능할까요 softens by asking possibility: “오늘 중으로 확인 가능할까요?” It gives the listener more room than a direct command.

해 주실 수 있을까요 is a more explicit ability/request frame. It is useful when asking for actual labor: “자료를 다시 보내 주실 수 있을까요?” It can sound wordy if the burden is tiny.

검토 부탁드립니다 is a workplace formula. It asks for review, not necessarily approval. 협조 요청드립니다 is more formal and institutional; it belongs in notices, interdepartmental requests, and public campaigns more than friendly messages.

Guided reading

바쁘시겠지만 내일까지 초안 검토 부탁드려도 될까요?

This sentence does several things. 바쁘시겠지만 acknowledges burden. 내일까지 gives deadline. 초안 검토 names task. 부탁드려도 될까요 leaves room for refusal or negotiation. It is much better than “내일까지 봐 주세요” when the listener is a senior colleague or busy collaborator.

Learner traps

Do not use 주세요 for everything. “보고서 고쳐 주세요” may be grammatically polite but socially abrupt if the task is heavy. Do not over-bury the request either. Korean indirectness should not make the task impossible to identify. Also watch hierarchy: 부탁드립니다 can still be too direct if no context, deadline, or gratitude is included.

Reusable workflow

  1. Rate the burden: object, information, small action, review, revision, deadline change, cooperation.
  2. Identify relationship and rank.
  3. Add context before heavy requests.
  4. Use a request frame with enough refusal space.
  5. Close with thanks or acknowledgment: 감사합니다, 번거롭게 해 드려 죄송합니다, 확인 부탁드립니다.

A request-builder that asks burden level, relationship, deadline, and channel, then generates phrase options and flags overdirect or overformal wording.

Additional practice and repair

What this pass strengthens

Request vocabulary in Korean is not solved by adding 요 or using 부탁드립니다. This pass adds a burden ladder and shows how context, deadline, and room for refusal shape natural requests.

Burden ladder

BurdenNatural frameExampleNote
Tiny service request주세요 / 부탁드려요물 좀 주세요Direct is fine in service context
Small favor가능할까요?잠깐 확인 가능할까요?Softens imposition
Workplace review검토 부탁드립니다자료 검토 부탁드립니다Common, but add deadline/context if needed
Time-consuming help해 주실 수 있을까요?내일까지 확인해 주실 수 있을까요?Shows burden and asks ability
Institutional cooperation협조 요청드립니다설문 참여 협조 요청드립니다Formal collective request
High-burden ask어렵겠지만… 가능하실까요?일정상 촉박하지만 검토 가능하실까요?Needs reason, deadline, and refusal space

Before/after repair lab

Weak learner request:

이거 해 주세요.

Possible repairs:

  • Casual/service: 이거 하나 주세요.
  • Coworker small task: 시간 되실 때 이 부분 확인 부탁드려요.
  • Deadline task: 오늘 오후 3시까지 이 부분 검토 가능하실까요?
  • High-burden ask: 급하게 부탁드려 죄송한데, 가능하시다면 오늘 중으로 검토해 주실 수 있을까요?

Hidden-overpromise warning

Phrases like 확인해 보겠습니다 and 검토해 보겠습니다 can be polite non-commitment. Learners should not interpret them as guaranteed action unless the speaker gives a deadline, owner, or concrete next step.

The request builder should include burden, relationship, deadline, and optional refusal space. It should show when a direct request is acceptable and when the request needs softening, context, or gratitude.

Publication hardening checklist

Add contrast examples for service staff, professor, colleague, close friend, and public notice. Avoid teaching Korean politeness as universal indirectness; sometimes direct form is natural when role and setting support it.
