When every word is familiar but the sentence will not resolve

Dense Korean often defeats intermediate learners because vocabulary knowledge is not enough. Consider:

이에 따라 해당 사업의 추진 필요성이 제기됐으나, 예산 확보와 관계 기관 협의가 지연되면서 실제 시행 시점은 아직 확정되지 않은 것으로 나타났다.

Most words are learnable: 이에 따라, 해당, 사업, 추진, 필요성, 제기되다, 예산 확보, 협의, 지연되다, 시행 시점, 확정되다. The problem is structure.

Step 1: Find the final predicate

Final predicate:

나타났다 — it appeared / was found / was shown

But what appeared?

실제 시행 시점은 아직 확정되지 않은 것으로 나타났다. It was found that the actual implementation date has not yet been finalized.

Now we know the main report.

Step 2: Identify topic and contrast

시행 시점은 marks the implementation date as topic. 아직 확정되지 않은 것 is the content.

The earlier clause begins with 이에 따라 and contains 으나, a contrast:

필요성이 제기됐으나 — the need was raised, but…

So the sentence says: need was raised, but budget and institutional consultation were delayed, so the actual implementation date remains unconfirmed.

Step 3: Break noun stacks

Dense Korean loves nominal chains:

  • 해당 사업의 추진 필요성
  • 예산 확보
  • 관계 기관 협의
  • 실제 시행 시점

Expand them:

Noun stackExpanded meaning
사업의 추진 필요성the need to promote/carry out the project
예산 확보securing the budget
관계 기관 협의consultation with relevant agencies
시행 시점the time when implementation begins

Step 4: Mark cause, contrast, and result

  • 이에 따라 — as a result / accordingly
  • 으나 — but / although
  • ~면서 — as/while, with the result that
  • 아직 — not yet
  • ~것으로 나타났다 — was found/reported to be

Now the logic is visible.

Step 5: Translate in meaning order

Natural English:

Accordingly, the need to carry out the project was raised. However, because budget securing and consultations with relevant agencies were delayed, the actual implementation date has not yet been finalized.

The English has two sentences. Korean had one. That is fine. Translation follows meaning, not punctuation length.

Dense-sentence annotation legend

Use these marks:

  • [PRED] final predicate
  • [TOPIC] topic phrase
  • [MOD] modifier
  • [QUOTE] reported content
  • [CAUSE] cause frame
  • [CONTRAST] contrast frame
  • [STATUS] process/status phrase
  • [NOUN STACK] compressed nominal group

Example:

[CAUSE 이에 따라] [NOUN STACK 해당 사업의 추진 필요성]이 제기됐으나[CONTRAST], [NOUN STACK 예산 확보와 관계 기관 협의]가 지연되면서, [TOPIC 실제 시행 시점은] 아직 확정되지 않은 것으로 [PRED 나타났다].

Reusable workflow

  1. Start at the end.
  2. Locate final predicate and sentence ending.
  3. Identify topic/subject closest to the predicate.
  4. Collapse noun stacks into simple clauses.
  5. Mark logic connectors.
  6. Separate reported claim from writer framing.
  7. Translate into natural English after structure is clear.

Dense sentence surgery: learners paste a sentence, mark predicate and noun stacks, then the tool asks them to expand each compressed unit and rebuild the sentence in meaning order.

Additional practice and repair

This article overlaps with 112 but should feel more operational: 112 explains how long sentences are built; 113 gives a step-by-step emergency procedure for dense sentences where every word is familiar but the structure will not resolve.

Add a fixed parsing algorithm:

  1. Box the final ending: -다, -었다, -ㄹ 예정이다, -는 것으로 나타났다, -라고 밝혔다.
  2. Identify the main predicate and its type: action, state, report, evaluation, obligation, prediction.
  3. Find the subject/topic nearest to that predicate.
  4. Collapse long noun phrases into temporary labels: [정부 발표 대책], [중소기업 대상 지원].
  5. Mark particles: 이/가, 은/는, 을/를, , 에서, 으로, 에 따라.
  6. Identify quotation or embedded clause boundaries.
  7. Translate only after the Korean map is stable.

Dense sentence drill

최근 급격히 증가한 온라인 거래와 관련해 소비자 피해를 줄이기 위한 제도 개선 필요성이 제기됐다.

  • Final predicate: 제기됐다 = was raised.
  • Main subject: 제도 개선 필요성이 = need for system improvement.
  • Purpose modifier: 소비자 피해를 줄이기 위한 = to reduce consumer harm.
  • Domain frame: 최근 급격히 증가한 온라인 거래와 관련해 = in relation to recently rapidly increasing online transactions.
  • Natural reading: “The need to improve the system to reduce consumer harm has been raised in connection with the recent rapid increase in online transactions.”

Before/after learner translation

Literal draftProblemBetter translation
“recently rapidly increased online transaction related consumer harm to reduce system improvement necessity was raised”preserves Korean order but not English meaning“There have been calls to improve the system to reduce consumer harm linked to the recent surge in online transactions.”

The dense-sentence parser should include a scratchpad where users rename long noun phrases. Example: 최근 급격히 증가한 온라인 거래 becomes [recent online transaction surge]. This reduces working-memory load and teaches a professional translation habit.
