News Korean: Attribution, Headline Compression, and Agency Style
The reader can read Korean news prose by expanding compressed headlines, identifying attribution verbs, source hierarchy, agency style, officials, speed labels, and reported versus claimed information.
Core examples: 밝혔다, 전했다, 주장했다, 보도했다, 따르면, 관계자, 헤드라인, 속보, 연합뉴스.
Korean headlines do not always contain full sentences
A headline says:
정부, 내년 예산안 발표…“민생 지원 확대”
A learner may ask: where is the verb? Who said what? Is the quote official? Korean news headlines often compress subjects, actions, quote fragments, and context.
The key principle is:
News Korean must be expanded before it is interpreted.
Headline compression
헤드라인
headline.
Korean headlines often omit particles, endings, and full verbs:
정부, 대책 발표 Government announces measures.
코스피 상승 마감 KOSPI closes higher.
시민단체 “철회해야” civic group: “must withdraw.”
Learner action: expand the headline into a full sentence before translating.
밝혔다
밝혔다
said/revealed/stated/announced, depending context.
News use:
정부는 ...라고 밝혔다. The government stated that...
회사는 ...이라고 밝혔다. The company said that...

Learner action: identify the speaker and whether the statement is fact, claim, plan, or position.
전했다
전했다

News use:
통신은 ...라고 전했다. the news agency reported that...
관계자는 ...라고 전했다. an official/source said/conveyed that...
Learner action: 전했다 often marks transmission of information from a source.
주장했다
주장했다
claimed/argued/asserted.
This is stronger and more stance-loaded than 밝혔다.
Example:
단체는 정책이 부당하다고 주장했다. The organization claimed/argued that the policy is unfair.
Learner action: 주장했다 marks a position, not confirmed fact.
보도했다
보도했다
reported in media.
Related:
보도자료 press release
언론 보도 media report
보도에 따르면 according to reports
Learner action: 보도했다 tells the information came through news reporting, not necessarily primary source.

News patterns:
경찰에 따르면 according to police

관계자에 따르면 according to an official/source

관계자
관계자
official/person concerned/person involved/source, depending context.
Examples:
정부 관계자 government official/source
업계 관계자 industry official/insider
회사 관계자 company official/source
관계자 can be vague. It does not always name a person.
Learner action: note anonymity and institutional proximity.
속보
속보

Related:
단독 exclusive
후속보도 follow-up report
정정보도 correction
오보 erroneous report

News-reading workflow
When reading Korean news:
- Expand headline into full sentence.
- Identify source outlet and genre.
- Find lead sentence.
- Mark attribution phrases.
- Identify who said what.
- Separate fact, claim, plan, interpretation, and quote.
- Note anonymous 관계자 sources.
- Check whether story is 속보 or update.
- Compare headline claim with article body.
- Summarize with source attribution included.
News attribution strength table
Korean news should be read through who says what.
| Phrase | Source/claim status |
|---|---|
| 밝혔다 | source stated/announced |
| 전했다 | conveyed/reported |
| 주장했다 | claimed/argued |
| 보도했다 | reported by media |
| 따르면 | according to |
| 관계자 | official/source; often vague |
| 확인됐다 | reportedly/was confirmed |
| 알려졌다 | became known; source may be indirect |
| 속보 | breaking; may be incomplete |
Attribution is part of the fact pattern.
Headline expansion checklist
For every compressed headline, restore:
- subject;
- verb;
- quote source;
- omitted particles;
- time frame;
- whether the quoted phrase is claim, plan, or result.
A headline should not be trusted until it is expanded against the article body.
Agency-copy caution
연합뉴스 and other agency/wire-style text may be republished across outlets. Multiple reposts of the same wire story are not independent confirmation. In a source-literacy article, identify original source and republisher when possible.
A strong tool for this article would reconstruct compressed headlines.
Suggested functions:
- Missing-verb generator.
- Source-attribution highlighter.
- Quote-frame detector.
- Claim/fact/interpretation labels.
- Anonymous-source warning.
- Agency-copy marker.
- Plain-language news summary.
Final rule
News Korean is not just reading fast. It is reading source.
밝혔다, 전했다, 주장했다, 보도했다, 따르면, 관계자, 속보, and agency names tell how information reached the article. 헤드라인 compresses grammar.
Expand first. Attribute second. Interpret third.
