Article body

English “fix” is too flexible. Korean splits repair by object type and social frame. 고치다 is the broad everyday repair/correction verb. 치료하다 belongs to medical treatment. 수정하다 is revision or correction of text, data, code, design, or plan. 개선하다 is improvement of a system, condition, process, or quality.

고치다 can fix a clock, correct a typo, change a bad habit, repair a house, or revise speech. It is useful and everyday. But because it is broad, it can sound too simple in institutional writing. A government report does not usually say “제도를 고쳤다” if the intended frame is policy improvement; it says “제도를 개선했다” or “제도 개선을 추진했다.”

치료하다 requires a health frame. You 치료하다 a disease, symptom, patient, wound, or condition. Learners sometimes use 고치다 for illness because English says “fix a health problem.” In Korean, 병을 고치다 can occur idiomatically, but 치료하다 is the medical-domain verb, and 진료하다/처방하다/수술하다 may be needed in clinical contexts.

수정하다 is for changing an existing representation: document, draft, plan, code, design, record, sentence. It does not necessarily mean the underlying system improved; it means the expression, data, or item was modified/corrected.

개선하다 is for making something better: service quality, working conditions, infrastructure, process, relationship, performance, health habits. It often appears with nouns like 환경, 제도, 품질, 문제, 상황, and 관계.

Guided reading

회사는 오류를 수정하고, 고객 대응 절차를 개선하겠다고 밝혔다.

수정하다 targets the error itself. 개선하다 targets the broader response process. If a learner translates both as “fix,” the sentence loses the difference between correcting a mistake and changing a system.

Learner traps

Do not say “문서를 치료하다.” Do not say “병원을 개선하다” if you mean a doctor treated a patient. Do not use 수정하다 when you mean physical repair unless the object is a design/specification. Do not overuse 개선하다 for tiny edits: “이 문장 조금 개선해 주세요” can work in a feedback context, but “수정해 주세요” is often cleaner.

Reusable workflow

  1. Identify what is wrong or lacking.
  2. Classify the target: body, text, machine, system, relationship, record, behavior.
  3. Choose the verb that matches the target.
  4. Add a result phrase if needed: 깨끗하게 고치다, 오류를 수정하다, 품질을 개선하다.
  5. In formal writing, prefer the domain verb over the broad verb.

What this pass strengthens

This article is high-value because “fix” is one of the worst English-to-Korean traps. The remediation pass adds a domain map so learners choose the verb by the thing being repaired, not by the English word “fix.”

Possible repairs:

  • 정부가 제도를 개선했다. System-level improvement.
  • 정부가 문제점을 보완했다. Supplemented weaknesses.
  • 정부가 오류를 정정했다. Corrected an error.
  • 정부가 대책을 마련했다. Created a measure; not merely “fixed.”

Domain safety note

For medical language, this article should remain lexical. It can explain 치료하다, 진료하다, 처치하다, and 처방하다 as vocabulary fields, but it should not advise readers what treatment is appropriate.

Create a “repair verb router” with one mandatory input: What is the object? Body, document, machine, software, policy, relationship, habit, record, or data. The output should show likely verbs and sample collocations.

Publication hardening checklist

Add examples from medicine, software, school writing, public policy, and customer service. Do not let 고치다 become the default answer; it is broad but often not the best word.
