Opening problem

A subway announcement says:

이용객 여러분께 안내 말씀드립니다. 안전을 위해 승강장 안쪽에서 기다려 주시기 바랍니다.

The meaning is simple. The register is not. It uses an audience term, deferential formula, reason phrase, safety framing, and polite instruction. Korean public announcements often sound authoritative because they combine institutional politeness with predictable structure.

Announcement structure

A common public announcement has five parts:

  1. Audience: 이용객 여러분, 승객 여러분, 고객님, 시민 여러분.
  2. Announcement frame: 안내 말씀드립니다, 알려드립니다.
  3. Event or reason: 열차 지연으로 인해, 안전을 위해, 공사 관계로.
  4. Requested action: 기다려 주시기 바랍니다, 이용해 주시기 바랍니다, 협조 부탁드립니다.
  5. Closing or apology: 불편을 드려 죄송합니다, 감사합니다.

Polite does not mean optional

Korean announcements often phrase instructions politely:

기다려 주시기 바랍니다. 이용해 주시기 바랍니다. 협조 부탁드립니다.

These are not casual requests. In institutional context, they function as instructions. Learners should not translate them as weak “please, if you want.” The politeness protects public tone while preserving authority.

Comparison

Casual:

여기서 기다리세요.

Public announcement:

안전을 위해 승강장 안쪽에서 기다려 주시기 바랍니다.

The second sentence is longer because it frames audience, reason, safety, and proper conduct. It is not just “more polite.” It is more institutional.

Workflow

When hearing an announcement:

  1. Find the audience.
  2. Find the event: delay, arrival, safety issue, service change.
  3. Find the requested action.
  4. Check urgency: routine, warning, emergency.
  5. Notice formula: apology, cooperation, prohibition, safety.
  6. Translate action first, politeness second.

Additional practice and repair

The public-announcement article needs a formula library with action roles. Announcements sound authoritative not because they are rude, but because they control audience, timing, safety, and expected behavior through highly predictable phrasing. Learners should be able to hear the skeleton even when the audio is fast.

Before/after repair

Weak note:

“Public announcements are just polite commands.”

Remediated note:

“Public announcements combine audience call, event update, reason, instruction, and closing formula. Politeness is part of controlled authority, not the opposite of authority.”

Weak listening strategy:

“Try to catch every word.”

Remediated listening strategy:

“First catch the announcement frame: audience, event, action, location, time, reason. Then replay for details.”

Added practice protocol

Train with blanks:

이용객 여러분, 잠시 후 ___행 열차가 도착합니다. 안전을 위해 ___ 뒤로 물러나 주시기 바랍니다.

Learners fill route/destination and required action. This simulates real station listening, where the first goal is behavior, not literary translation.

The announcement module should include an audio skeleton mode. It hides content words at first and asks users to identify function slots: audience, event, place, action, reason, and closing. A second pass reveals transcript and pitch/pausing. This prevents learners from freezing when they miss one noun.

Build a Public Announcement Transcript Trainer. Learners hear a station announcement, fill in missing formulae, and tag audience/event/action/reason. Include normal-speed and noisy-background audio modes.
