Economic Korean: 경기, 물가, 임금, 투자, 소비

The reader can read basic Korean economic reporting by linking vocabulary to indicators, actors, movement verbs, and interpretation frames.

Article body

Economic Korean uses ordinary-looking nouns as technical signals. 경기, 물가, 임금, 투자, and 소비 appear constantly in headlines, central-bank discussion, policy analysis, household news, and business reporting. The difficulty is not memorizing the words. The difficulty is attaching each word to the metrics and verbs it normally takes.

경기 in economic writing means economic conditions or the business cycle, not a sports match. 경기 회복, 경기 둔화, 경기 침체, 경기 부양 are recurring frames. The same Hangul form can mean a game/match in sports, so domain is decisive.

물가 means prices in the aggregate, often inflation-related. It pairs with 오르다, 상승하다, 안정되다, 잡다, 부담, 압력. “물가가 높다” is about cost-of-living pressure; “물가상승률” is an indicator.

임금 is wages, not all income. It appears with 최저임금, 실질임금, 임금 인상, 임금 격차. 소득 and 수입 are related but not interchangeable.

투자 means investment. It can be business investment, facility investment, financial investment, public investment, or personal investment. The verbs 늘리다, 줄이다, 확대하다, 위축되다, 유치하다, 집행하다 matter.

소비 means consumption/spending. In reporting it often appears as 소비 심리, 소비 회복, 민간소비, 소비자물가, 소비 둔화. It connects household behavior to macroeconomic interpretation.

Guided reading

물가 상승으로 소비가 둔화되면서 경기 회복세가 약해지고 있다.

The sentence is a chain of macro relations: price increases → consumption slowdown → weakening recovery. A word-by-word translation is possible, but the reader should see the indicator network.

Learner traps

Do not read 경기 as “game” in an economic headline. Do not translate 물가 as “prices” without noticing whether the article is talking about CPI, household burden, or inflation pressure. Do not treat 투자 as only personal stock investing. Do not mistake 임금 for any money received.

Reusable workflow

  1. Sort terms into prices, labor, household, production, finance, or trade.
  2. Attach the movement verb: 상승/하락, 증가/감소, 확대/축소, 회복/둔화.
  3. Identify whether the sentence is data, interpretation, forecast, or policy response.
  4. Watch comparison phrases: 전년 대비, 전월 대비, 예상보다, 이전보다.

What this pass strengthens

Economic Korean is high-risk because familiar words invite overconfidence. This pass adds a “metric + movement + frame” method so readers learn sentence architecture rather than isolated business words.

Metric-frame diagnostic

TermWhat to askCommon verbs/framesReading caution
경기Which economy/sector cycle?회복되다, 둔화되다, 침체되다Not “game” in this domain
물가Which prices? consumer, import, food, energy?오르다, 상승하다, 안정되다Often tied to inflation discussion
임금Which wage group/timeframe?인상되다, 상승하다, 정체되다Distinguish nominal/real if source does
투자Public, corporate, facility, financial?늘다, 위축되다, 확대되다Not always stock investment
소비Household spending, retail sales, demand?회복되다, 감소하다, 둔화되다Often framed as demand indicator
금리Policy rate, lending rate, market rate?인상하다, 동결하다, 인하하다Actor matters: central bank vs market
환율Which currency pair?상승하다, 하락하다, 변동하다Korean headlines may frame USD/KRW differently

Before/after repair lab

Weak learner translation:

물가가 안정됐다 = prices are safe.

Repair:

물가가 안정됐다 usually means price levels/inflation have stabilized, not that prices are “safe.” Ask: compared with what period, using which indicator, and according to which source?

Weak learner translation:

경기가 나쁘다 = the game is bad.

Repair:

In economic sources, 경기 means economic conditions or business cycle. Read neighboring terms: 경기 회복, 경기 둔화, 내수 경기, 경기 침체.

Domain boundary

The article should explicitly say it is not investment advice. It teaches reading of economic language: indicators, reported movement, source claims, and uncertainty.

The economic glossary tool should require a source frame: headline, statistics release, central-bank commentary, company report, or household article. It should tag each sentence for metric, direction, comparison base, causal claim, and hedging.

Publication hardening checklist

Add examples with 전년 대비, 전월 대비, 상승률, 하락세, 회복세, and 둔화. Economic Korean is often comparative; the reader needs the comparison base as much as the noun.
