Semiconductor Chinese: 芯片, 封装, 制程, 光刻
The reader can read Chinese semiconductor industry coverage and distinguish chip design, fabrication, packaging, equipment, and policy language.
Safety/editorial boundary: This is industry-language literacy, not investment, export-control, technical manufacturing, or policy advice.
Semiconductor Chinese is an industry-chain language
Chinese semiconductor coverage is full of big claims, technical terms, and policy framing. A single paragraph may mention 芯片设计, 晶圆制造, 光刻, 封装测试, EDA, 设备材料, 良率, 国产化, and 供应链安全. Without a map of the industry chain, learners either over-translate or over-believe headlines.
The first reading task is to ask: which stage is being discussed?
Core vocabulary by industry-chain stage
| Stage | Chinese | Reading note |
|---|---|---|
| Design | 芯片设计, 架构, IP核, EDA, 流片 | Design, architecture, IP core, design tools, tape-out/trial production |
| Manufacturing | 晶圆, 制程, 光刻, 刻蚀, 薄膜, 掺杂 | Wafer fab and process steps |
| Packaging/testing | 封装, 测试, 封测, 良率, 可靠性 | Packaging/testing and yield/reliability |
| Equipment/materials | 光刻机, 设备, 材料, 靶材, 光刻胶 | Tools and materials |
| Business roles | 代工, IDM, Fabless, 供应商, 客户 | Foundry, integrated manufacturer, design-only firm, supplier, customer |
| Policy/market | 国产化, 突破, 瓶颈, 产能, 供应链 | Localization, breakthrough, bottleneck, capacity, supply chain |
Key terms
芯片 is broad: integrated circuit/chip, but popular media may use it loosely. 半导体 is broader than chips; it can refer to materials, devices, industry, companies, or sector. 晶圆 is wafer. 制程 in headlines often points to process node, but articles may use it generally for manufacturing process. 光刻 is lithography; 光刻机 is lithography equipment. 封装 is packaging, not product packaging in the consumer sense. 良率 is yield, a key manufacturing metric.
Worked industry paragraph
公司表示,新一代车规级芯片已完成流片,预计下半年进入小批量试产。该产品采用成熟制程,重点提升可靠性和功耗表现,并将通过国内封测厂完成封装测试。
Annotation:
- 车规级芯片 = automotive-grade chip.
- 完成流片 = tape-out completed; not necessarily mass production.
- 预计 = expected; forecast language.
- 下半年进入小批量试产 = enter small-batch trial production in second half of year.
- 成熟制程 = mature process node/technology, not necessarily cutting-edge.
- 可靠性和功耗表现 = reliability and power-consumption performance.
- 国内封测厂 = domestic packaging/testing plant/company.
- 封装测试 = packaging and testing.
The biggest trap here is reading 完成流片 as “product is ready.” Tape-out is an important stage, but not the same as qualification, yield ramp, mass production, or commercial shipment.
Hype language and caution words
Semiconductor articles often use words that need careful reading:
- 突破 — breakthrough; ask what was actually demonstrated.
- 国产替代 — domestic substitution/localization; ask stage and scope.
- 卡脖子 — bottleneck/chokepoint; rhetorical and policy-heavy.
- 量产 — mass production; stronger than 试产.
- 小批量 — small batch.
- 良率提升 — yield improvement; ask from what baseline.
- 自主可控 — self-controlled/independent and controllable; policy/industrial-security register.
Learner traps and repairs
| Trap | Weak reading | Better reading |
|---|---|---|
| 半导体 = chip | same as 芯片 | Semiconductor can mean industry, material, device, component, or chip sector. |
| 封装 = packaging box | consumer packaging | In semiconductors, packaging is a manufacturing stage after wafer fabrication. |
| 流片 = mass production | ready to sell | Tape-out/trial production step; still may need testing/yield/qualification. |
| 成熟制程 = old/bad | inferior | Mature process can be appropriate for power, automotive, industrial, analog, and cost-sensitive uses. |
| 突破 = confirmed global leadership | headline proof | Look for measurable claim, process stage, customer validation, and production status. |
Practice protocol
For each semiconductor article, label every term as design, fabrication, packaging/testing, equipment/material, business role, or policy claim. Then mark every stage word: 研发, 流片, 试产, 量产, 交付, 导入客户.
Upgrade and remediation layer
Semiconductor Chinese needs more caution around hype and supply-chain roles. This domain is full of words that sound like breakthroughs but may describe incremental progress, capacity planning, policy goals, or marketing. The upgraded article should train readers to locate the industry-chain stage first.
| Stage | Chinese | What it refers to |
|---|---|---|
| Design | 芯片设计, EDA, 架构, IP核 | Design tools and architecture |
| Fabrication | 晶圆, 制程, 光刻, 刻蚀, 沉积 | Wafer manufacturing processes |
| Equipment/materials | 设备, 光刻机, 材料, 掩膜版 | Inputs and tools |
| Packaging/testing | 封装, 测试, 封测, 良率 | Post-fabrication packaging and testing |
| Foundry/business | 代工, 产能, 订单, 供应链 | Production model and market capacity |
| Policy | 国产化, 突破, 瓶颈, 自主可控 | Industrial-policy framing |
Before/after repair:
公司表示其先进封装产线良率稳步提升,但核心设备仍依赖外部供应。
Weak reading: “Advanced packaging line good rate rises; core equipment depends outside.” Better reading: “The company says the yield of its advanced-packaging production line is steadily improving, but key equipment still depends on external suppliers.” 良率 is yield; 先进封装 is a packaging technology category; 外部供应 is supply-chain dependence.
Add a caution sidebar for 突破. In headlines, 实现突破 may describe technical proof, product release, production capability, local substitution, or policy milestone. The article should ask: breakthrough in what stage, measured how, at what scale, and according to whom?
Tool upgrade: the chip-production pipeline should label every sentence by stage and claim type: technical fact, capacity claim, policy claim, market claim, or hype phrase. It should flag 先进, 领先, 突破, 自主, 可控 as words requiring evidence.
Publication QA: avoid making claims about real semiconductor capabilities unless source-checked and dated. Use fictional company examples for language drills.
Build a chip-production pipeline. Users drag terms into design, wafer fabrication, packaging, testing, product qualification, and market/application. Add warning labels for hype words such as 突破, 国产化, 领先, 自主可控.
