Semiconductor Chinese is an industry-chain language

Chinese semiconductor coverage is full of big claims, technical terms, and policy framing. A single paragraph may mention 芯片设计, 晶圆制造, 光刻, 封装测试, EDA, 设备材料, 良率, 国产化, and 供应链安全. Without a map of the industry chain, learners either over-translate or over-believe headlines.

The first reading task is to ask: which stage is being discussed?

Key terms

芯片 is broad: integrated circuit/chip, but popular media may use it loosely. 半导体 is broader than chips; it can refer to materials, devices, industry, companies, or sector. 晶圆 is wafer. 制程 in headlines often points to process node, but articles may use it generally for manufacturing process. 光刻 is lithography; 光刻机 is lithography equipment. 封装 is packaging, not product packaging in the consumer sense. 良率 is yield, a key manufacturing metric.

Worked industry paragraph

公司表示,新一代车规级芯片已完成流片,预计下半年进入小批量试产。该产品采用成熟制程,重点提升可靠性和功耗表现,并将通过国内封测厂完成封装测试。

Annotation:

  • 车规级芯片 = automotive-grade chip.
  • 完成流片 = tape-out completed; not necessarily mass production.
  • 预计 = expected; forecast language.
  • 下半年进入小批量试产 = enter small-batch trial production in second half of year.
  • 成熟制程 = mature process node/technology, not necessarily cutting-edge.
  • 可靠性和功耗表现 = reliability and power-consumption performance.
  • 国内封测厂 = domestic packaging/testing plant/company.
  • 封装测试 = packaging and testing.

The biggest trap here is reading 完成流片 as “product is ready.” Tape-out is an important stage, but not the same as qualification, yield ramp, mass production, or commercial shipment.

Hype language and caution words

Semiconductor articles often use words that need careful reading:

  • 突破 — breakthrough; ask what was actually demonstrated.
  • 国产替代 — domestic substitution/localization; ask stage and scope.
  • 卡脖子 — bottleneck/chokepoint; rhetorical and policy-heavy.
  • 量产 — mass production; stronger than 试产.
  • 小批量 — small batch.
  • 良率提升 — yield improvement; ask from what baseline.
  • 自主可控 — self-controlled/independent and controllable; policy/industrial-security register.

Semiconductor Chinese needs more caution around hype and supply-chain roles. This domain is full of words that sound like breakthroughs but may describe incremental progress, capacity planning, policy goals, or marketing. The upgraded article should train readers to locate the industry-chain stage first.

Weak reading: “Advanced packaging line good rate rises; core equipment depends outside.” Better reading: “The company says the yield of its advanced-packaging production line is steadily improving, but key equipment still depends on external suppliers.” 良率 is yield; 先进封装 is a packaging technology category; 外部供应 is supply-chain dependence.

Add a caution sidebar for 突破. In headlines, 实现突破 may describe technical proof, product release, production capability, local substitution, or policy milestone. The article should ask: breakthrough in what stage, measured how, at what scale, and according to whom?

Tool upgrade: the chip-production pipeline should label every sentence by stage and claim type: technical fact, capacity claim, policy claim, market claim, or hype phrase. It should flag 先进, 领先, 突破, 自主, 可控 as words requiring evidence.

Publication QA: avoid making claims about real semiconductor capabilities unless source-checked and dated. Use fictional company examples for language drills.

Build a chip-production pipeline. Users drag terms into design, wafer fabrication, packaging, testing, product qualification, and market/application. Add warning labels for hype words such as 突破, 国产化, 领先, 自主可控.
