Designing Chinese Anki Cards for Words, Characters, and Collocations
The reader can design Chinese flashcards that train recognition, pronunciation, meaning, collocation, character form, and contextual use without turning review into trivia.
Why this article matters
Chinese flashcards fail when they ask for too much at once. A card that demands character writing, tone recall, English translation, word usage, grammar, and sentence production is not rigorous. It is overloaded. Good card design separates skills while keeping context.

The article
Anki is a review system, not a curriculum by itself. It can help Chinese learners remember words, characters, tones, collocations, and sentences. It can also consume all study time while reading and listening stagnate. The solution is not “more cards.” It is better card roles.
Start by deciding what the card is testing. If the target is recognition, show the Chinese word in a short source sentence and ask for meaning. If the target is listening, play audio and ask for transcription or recognition. If the target is collocation, hide the partner word: 提高___, 解决___, 承担___. If the target is character form, ask the learner to distinguish lookalikes or write only high-value characters.
Chinese cards need context because words are often broad. A front that says 处理 and asks “meaning?” is weak. A better card shows: 客服正在处理您的退款申请. The answer can say: 处理 = handle/process; common collocations: 处理问题, 处理订单, 处理申请. Now the card trains usage, not just gloss.
Avoid English prompts that invite too many answers. “To handle” could be 处理, 办理, 应对, 解决, 操作, 管理, 打理 depending on context. If you want production, include enough context: “handle a refund request in customer-service context.” Even then, production cards should be used sparingly unless a teacher or corpus confirms the answer.
For characters, do not make every character a handwriting card. Recognition, typing, and handwriting are separate skills. If you do not need to handwrite 鬱, do not spend review time producing it. But if you frequently confuse 请/清/情/晴, a lookalike card is useful.
Cloze cards are powerful when they delete one target. Bad cloze: 我{{c1::已经}}把{{c2::文件}}发给{{c3::他}}了. That tests too much. Better: 我___把文件发给他了。Answer: 已经. Or: 我已经把文件___他了。Answer: 发给. One card, one job.
Audio belongs on more cards than learners think. Chinese review without sound can produce silent reading fluency and weak listening. Add audio for high-frequency words, tone-sensitive contrasts, and sentences you plan to shadow.

Practice protocol
Audit 100 existing cards. Delete or suspend cards with no context, too many targets, rare low-value words, or unverified examples. Convert 20 cards into sentence or collocation cards. Add audio to the top 20 most useful cards.
Additional practice and repair
The first draft separates card types. The remediation pass should give a stricter card-design rule: each card should test one behavior, not all of Chinese at once.

The card builder should require a card purpose field: recognition, listening, collocation, character form, production, or grammar diagnosis. Add a warning when a card contains more than one target or too many unknowns.
