Medical safety note: This article explains label language. It does not advise whether to take, stop, combine, or dose any medicine. For real medication decisions, use professional medical guidance.

Drug labels are dense safety documents

Chinese medication labels and inserts are high-density texts. A small phrase can change practical meaning. The reader must identify the section before interpreting a sentence. 适应症, 禁忌, 用法用量, and 不良反应 are not interchangeable warning words.

Major label sections

Label sectionMeaning
成分ingredients/composition
性状physical description
适应症 / 功能主治indications / functions-main treatment
规格specification/strength/package spec
用法用量usage and dosage
不良反应adverse reactions
禁忌contraindications
注意事项precautions
药物相互作用drug interactions
贮藏storage
生产日期production date
有效期expiry period/date
批准文号approval number
处方药prescription drug
非处方药 / OTCover-the-counter drug

适应症 vs 禁忌

适应症 tells what condition or use the medication is indicated for. 禁忌 tells when it should not be used. These sections have opposite practical force.

A learner must not read 禁忌 as “strong caution” only. Contraindication language can mean the drug is not to be used under specified conditions. The language itself is a safety signal.

用法用量 patterns

Dosage instructions often use compact patterns:

  • 口服 — take orally
  • 外用 — external use
  • 每日三次 — three times daily
  • 每次一片 — one tablet each time
  • 饭前服用 — take before meals
  • 饭后服用 — take after meals
  • 睡前服用 — take before sleep
  • 遵医嘱 — follow physician's instructions
  • 儿童酌减 — reduce appropriately for children, as directed/contextually
  • 摇匀后使用 — shake well before use

The learner should identify frequency, amount, route, timing, and special instruction.

Warning phrases

PhraseReading
禁用must not use / prohibited use
慎用use with caution
避免avoid
不宜not suitable/advisable
过敏者禁用people allergic to it must not use it
孕妇慎用pregnant women use with caution
如出现…应停止使用if … occurs, stop use
请置于儿童不能接触处keep out of reach of children

Again, this is language comprehension. Real medical interpretation belongs to professionals.

Worked label excerpt

用法用量: 口服。成人一次一片,一日三次,饭后服用。儿童用量请遵医嘱。 不良反应: 偶见恶心、皮疹等。 禁忌: 对本品成分过敏者禁用。 注意事项: 服药期间如出现严重不适,应及时就医。

Plain reading:

  • Route: oral.
  • Adult dose: one tablet each time, three times daily, after meals.
  • Children's dosage: follow physician instructions.
  • Possible adverse reactions include nausea and rash.
  • People allergic to ingredients must not use it.
  • If severe discomfort occurs during use, seek medical care.

Date and storage language

  • 有效期至2027年05月 — valid until May 2027
  • 生产日期 — manufacturing date
  • 批号 — batch number
  • 密封保存 — store sealed
  • 阴凉干燥处保存 — store in a cool dry place
  • 避光保存 — protect from light

Date formats and storage conditions are practical reading skills. They are not optional details.

Learner traps

TrapCorrection
适应症 = symptomsIt means indication/use, not “symptom list”
禁忌 = taboo in cultural senseIn labels, contraindication
一日三次 = once every three daysNo, three times per day
饭后 = after cookingAfter meals
遵医嘱 = optional adviceFollow medical instructions

Build a Medication Box Label Map. Users click sections on a mock package: indications, dosage, adverse reactions, contraindications, precautions, storage, date, approval number. Add safety banners and a “language only” mode.

Remediation and upgrade layer

Medication-label Chinese is dense and safety-critical. The remediation layer should train readers to identify label sections and warning force without interpreting whether the drug is appropriate for them.

Label-section diagnostic

SectionCommon mistakeSafer reading question
适应症 / 功能主治Treat as a recommendation for self-use.What condition/use does the label state? Do not decide treatment from vocabulary alone.
用法用量Read only the number.Identify route, dose, frequency, timing, population, and “遵医嘱” language.
禁忌Treat as a strong suggestion.Contraindication language means “do not use under these conditions” in label logic.
注意事项Skip as fine print. This may contain warnings, populations, interactions, and monitoring notes.
不良反应Assume every listed event will occur. It lists possible adverse reactions, often with frequency/context.
药物相互作用Translate as generic “interaction.”It concerns other drugs/substances and needs professional interpretation.

Article-level repair examples

Weak version: “Learn labels like 适应症, 用法用量, 禁忌.”

Upgraded version: “Learn label architecture: identity, composition, indications, dosage, adverse reactions, contraindications, precautions, interactions, storage, expiry, manufacturer, and prescription/OTC status. Section location changes the force of the words.”

Weak learner takeaway: “If I can translate it, I can use it.”

Repaired takeaway: “Translation helps you identify the section and ask better questions. It does not determine whether a medicine is safe or suitable.”

Dosage-pattern drill

PatternWhat to extract
每日三次Frequency per day.
每次一片Amount per dose.
饭前 / 饭后Timing relative to meals.
口服 / 外用Route of administration.
儿童酌减Population/dose caution; not a formula for self-calculation.
遵医嘱Follow medical professional instruction.
置阴凉干燥处保存Storage condition.
