Article body

Education Korean is an institutional vocabulary field. Words like 입시, 학점, 학적, 지도, and 평가 are not interchangeable school words. They mark stages in a student’s relationship with institutions.

입시 refers to entrance exams/admissions competition, especially the system and process around getting into schools or universities. It is not just “test.” It includes preparation, strategy, policy, parents, private education, deadlines, and social pressure.

학점 is credit, usually tied to courses, graduation requirements, GPA-like records, and university administration. It appears in 수강신청, 학점 인정, 학점 이수, 평균 평점, 졸업 요건.

학적 is student status/academic record. It is a bureaucratic word. 학적 변동 can include leave of absence, return to school, withdrawal, transfer, graduation, expulsion, or status changes. A learner who translates it as “school record” may miss its administrative force.

지도 can mean guidance, advising, instruction, coaching, or supervision depending on context. 지도교수 is academic adviser; 생활지도 is student-life guidance; 진로지도 is career guidance. It is not only “map.”

평가 is assessment or evaluation. It appears in grades, teacher evaluation, program evaluation, performance review, entrance screening, policy evaluation, and rubric language.

Guided reading

학적 변동이 있는 학생은 지도교수와 상담 후 학과 사무실에 관련 서류를 제출해야 한다.

The sentence belongs to university administration. 학적 변동 is a status change, 지도교수 is adviser/supervisor, 학과 사무실 is department office, 서류 제출 is procedure. This is not everyday school conversation.

Learner traps

Do not translate 지도교수 as “map professor.” Do not assume 평가 is only grading; in policy and education it can be program evaluation. Do not translate 학점 as “point” without the credit-system frame.

Reusable workflow

  1. Place the term on the student timeline: admissions, enrollment, course-taking, advising, evaluation, graduation.
  2. Identify the office or actor: 학과, 교무처, 지도교수, 학생처.
  3. Find required action: 신청, 제출, 상담, 확인, 이수.
  4. Watch deadlines and status-change terms.

Additional practice and repair

What this pass strengthens

Education Korean is more than school vocabulary. This pass makes the article stronger by mapping terms onto a student’s institutional lifecycle: application, enrollment, course-taking, evaluation, status, graduation, and records.

Before/after repair lab

Weak learner reading:

학점 = grade.

Repair:

학점 usually means credit or credit unit, though it can appear in contexts related to grades and GPA. 성적 is the broader word for grades/performance. A transcript may include both.

Weak learner reading:

학적 = school record.

Repair:

학적 is the official student-status record. It connects to 재학, 휴학, 복학, 자퇴, 제적, 졸업, and transfer records. It is more institutional than “school record.”

Register guardrail

A student may say “수업 신청했어?” but the university portal says 수강신청. A friend may say “성적 나왔어?” while an administrative office says 성적증명서 발급. The article should consistently show colloquial and administrative pairs.

The education-vocabulary module should be a timeline, not a dictionary list. Let users click a student status such as 휴학 or 복학 and see document phrases, likely office, required action, and neighboring terms.

Publication hardening checklist

Add a warning that Korean education terms differ by school level. 입시 in high school/university contexts, 학점 in university contexts, and 학적 in administrative contexts should not be flattened into “school words.”
