“See” is too small for みる

Japanese has several kanji for みる:

見る 観る 診る 看る

They share the reading みる in many contexts, but they point to different kinds of attention: ordinary seeing, viewing, medical examination, and caregiving.

The key principle is:

The kanji for みる tells you what kind of attention is involved.

Are you just seeing? Watching a performance? Examining a patient? Looking after someone? The object and social role decide.

見る: the broad default

見る is the general and safest form. It covers seeing, looking, watching, checking, and many idiomatic uses.

Examples:

テレビを見る watch TV

景色を見る look at the scenery

様子を見る see how things go / observe the situation

面倒を見る look after / take care of

Because 見る is broad, it often works when a more specific kanji would be possible. If you are unsure, 見る or kana みる may be safer than overselecting a specialized kanji.

観る: watch/view with appreciation or attention

観る is often used for watching films, theater, sports, art, or performances with attentive appreciation.

Examples:

映画を観る watch a movie

芝居を観る watch a play

試合を観る watch a match

美術展を観る view an art exhibition

The nuance is more intentional viewing or appreciation. テレビを見る is common, but 映画を観る is also common when emphasizing viewing as an event or art/media experience.

Do not overuse 観る for every visual act.

診る: examine medically

診る is used for medical examination by a doctor or clinician.

Examples:

医者が患者を診る The doctor examines the patient.

診察 medical examination

診断 diagnosis

This kanji marks professional medical evaluation. It is not ordinary looking.

A patient does not usually 診る themselves in the professional sense unless context supports medical self-examination.

看る: care for, nurse, look after

看る is used for caregiving or nursing, especially for sick, elderly, or dependent people.

Examples:

病人を看る care for a sick person

子どもを看る look after a child, depending on context

看護 nursing

It emphasizes care and watching over, not merely visual perception.

看る is less common in ordinary casual writing than 見る, but important in medical/care contexts.

面倒を見る and 様子を見る

Some expressions use 見る even when the meaning is not simple seeing.

面倒を見る take care of

様子を見る observe the situation / wait and see

These are fixed expressions. Do not mechanically replace them with 看る or 観る.

Collocation matters more than abstract logic.

Kana みる

Writers may use kana みる in auxiliary patterns:

やってみる try doing

This is not visual seeing. It means trying an action. It is normally written in kana as an auxiliary.

Example:

食べてみる try eating

Learner action: distinguish lexical 見る from auxiliary 〜てみる.

Example bank walkthrough

テレビを見る

General watching. 見る is standard.

Learner action: do not force 観る unless context calls for viewing as an event.

映画を観る

Watching a movie with attentive/viewing nuance.

Learner action: 見る also appears, but 観る can mark appreciation.

患者を診る

Doctor examines patient.

Learner action: 診る is clinical.

子どもを看る

Care for/watch over a child, depending on context.

Learner action: 看る emphasizes care.

面倒を見る

Look after/take care of.

Learner action: fixed expression with 見る.

様子を見る

Observe/wait and see.

Learner action: do not translate literally only.

診察

Medical examination.

Learner action: connect to 診る.

看護

Nursing.

Learner action: connect to 看る.

見る-family decision workflow

Ask:

  1. General seeing/checking/watching? 見る.
  2. Viewing art, film, sports, performance? 観る may fit.
  3. Medical examination by professional? 診る.
  4. Caregiving/nursing/watching over? 看る.
  5. Fixed expression? Use established spelling.
  6. Auxiliary “try doing”? Use 〜てみる.
  7. Uncertain in ordinary writing? 見る or kana may be safest.

見る is the default, but the other kanji mark roles

The specialized みる kanji often imply a role or mode of attention.

FormMode of attentionTypical role
見るgeneral seeing/checking/watchinganyone
観るattentive viewing/appreciationaudience/viewer
診るclinical examinationdoctor/clinician
看るcare and watching overcaregiver/nurse/family

This means the kanji does not only describe the object. It describes the relationship between observer and object.

患者を見る

This could mean “look at the patient” in a general sense.

患者を診る

This means medically examine the patient.

病人を看る

This means care for the sick person.

Media and art: 観る versus 見る

映画を観る and 映画を見る can both occur. 観る often frames the act as viewing a work, performance, or event. 見る is more general and neutral.

昨日、映画を見た。 I watched a movie yesterday.

黒澤映画を観る。 Watch Kurosawa films, with a stronger viewing/appreciation feel.

The difference is subtle, not absolute. Learners should not “correct” every 映画を見る to 映画を観る.

Careful with 看る

看る is meaningful but less common in everyday writing than learners may expect. 看護, 看病, and 看取る are important related words. In many casual contexts, 面倒を見る is more natural than 看る.

Compare:

子どもの面倒を見る。 look after a child

病人を看る。 care for a sick person

The second is more caregiving/medical-adjacent. Use it when that relation matters.

A strong tool for this article would map みる forms by object and role.

Suggested functions:

  1. Object selector: TV, movie, patient, child, situation, action.
  2. Role selector: viewer, doctor, caregiver, ordinary person.
  3. Recommended spelling: 見る, 観る, 診る, 看る, みる.
  4. Collocation warning: 面倒を見る, 様子を見る, やってみる.
  5. Register tags: ordinary, artistic, clinical, caregiving.
  6. Rewrite examples: what changes when kanji changes.

Final rule

見る is the broad default, but Japanese can sharpen みる by kanji.

観る frames attentive viewing. 診る frames medical examination. 看る frames care. 見る covers general seeing and many fixed expressions. 〜てみる is auxiliary “try.”

Choose the kanji by activity, object, and role.
