The reader can identify different reporting verbs and use them appropriately in speech, news, interviews, and academic writing.

“Say” is not one job in Chinese

English “say” can report casual speech, teaching, a public statement, a disputed claim, an expert point, or an institutional position. Mandarin has ordinary speech verbs such as and , but news, academic prose, and official writing rely heavily on reporting and stance verbs: 表示, , 指出, 强调, 透露, 回应, 认为, 说明, 显示. These verbs do not merely report words. They tell the reader how to treat the claim.

If you read Chinese news without noticing reporting verbs, you will miss who is responsible for the claim. If you write Chinese using only 说, your style will sound conversational even when the genre calls for formal distance.

说 and 讲

is the default speech verb:

  • 他说他明天来。 — He said he will come tomorrow.
  • 你怎么说? — What do you say / what do you think?

can mean speak, talk about, explain, lecture, tell a story, or teach:

  • 老师讲课。 — The teacher lectures/teaches.
  • 他讲了一个故事。 — He told a story.
  • 这个问题以后再讲。 — We will discuss/explain this issue later.

In some regions and speech communities, 讲 is also common for ordinary “say/speak.” Do not overcorrect it as wrong. But in Standard Mandarin writing, 说 is usually the safer ordinary reporting verb.

Formal reporting verbs as stance labels

Compare these sentences:

  • 专家说风险仍然存在。 — The expert said the risk remains.
  • 专家指出风险仍然存在。 — The expert pointed out that the risk remains.
  • 专家认为风险仍然存在。 — The expert believes/argues that the risk remains.
  • 公司称风险不存在。 — The company said/claimed the risk does not exist.
  • 公司表示将继续配合调查。 — The company stated it would continue cooperating with the investigation.

The event is similar, but the stance differs. 指出 gives the claim an evidential, analytical feel. 认为 frames it as opinion or judgment. often keeps editorial distance. 表示 presents a public position.

Stance labeling drill

For each sentence, label the claim type:

  1. 报告指出,该地区人口持续增长。 — evidence/report finding.
  2. 公司否认相关说法。 — denial of claim.
  3. 发言人表示愿意继续沟通。 — public position.
  4. 专家认为短期内价格不会大幅下降。 — expert judgment.
  5. 知情人士透露,项目已经暂停。 — source disclosure.

Build a reported-speech rewrite lab. Users enter a casual sentence with 说. The tool asks for genre—conversation, news, report, interview, academic summary—and then proposes 表示, 称, 指出, 强调, 透露, 回应, or 认为 with register notes. Include a “writer responsibility” slider: direct assertion, attributed claim, disputed claim, expert analysis, institutional position.

Quality-pass expansion: quote responsibility

Add a “responsibility for the claim” scale:

Reporting verbWriter distanceTypical use
low/neutralordinary speech, simple reporting
表示medium; reports public stanceofficial/company/person states position
medium-high; compressed attributionnews claims, contested or attributed information
指出lower distance; sounds evidence-backedreport/expert highlights a point
认为explicitly judgment/opinionanalysis, commentary, expert view
强调directs attentionspeeches, meetings, policy priorities
透露source-sensitivedisclosed information, insider detail
否认reports denialcontroversy, accusation, rumor

Rewrite exercise for publication

Start with: 他说这个项目有风险。

  • Casual: 他说这个项目有风险。
  • Expert analysis: 专家认为,这个项目存在一定风险。
  • Report finding: 报告指出,该项目仍存在风险。
  • Company denial: 公司否认项目存在重大风险。
  • Official stance: 有关部门表示,将继续关注项目风险。

This one example shows that reporting verbs create genre and stance, not just synonyms.

Remediation and upgrade pass: reporting verbs as stance control

Stance and distance matrix

VerbWhat it doesImplied stanceCommon subjects
saysneutral/basicanyone
speaks/tells/lecturesconversational or teaching/storytelling老师, 朋友, 主持人
表示states/expresses positionpublic stance, often official公司, 发言人, 部门, 负责人
says/claimscompressed attribution; sometimes distance媒体, 公司, 消息人士, 当事人
指出points outevidence/analysis flavor专家, 报告, 研究, 会议
强调emphasizespriority-setting会议, 领导, 文件, 专家
透露disclosesinformation not fully public or source-based知情人士, 相关人士
回应respondsreaction to question/controversy部门, 公司, 当事人

Remediation: do not translate all as “said” in notes

For reading, glossing them all as “said” throws away useful information. A learner’s notebook should record the stance:

  • 专家指出 — the text presents the claim as an analytical point.
  • 公司称 — the claim is attributed to the company; the writer may be keeping distance.
  • 发言人表示 — public position, not casual speech.
  • 报告显示 — data/report is treated as the evidential source.
  • 会议强调 — institutional emphasis or priority.

VersionChineseEffect
casual他们说没有涨价,只是调整了套餐。simple report
company statement公司表示,并未涨价,只是调整套餐内容。official corporate stance
skeptical news wording公司称并未涨价,只是调整套餐内容。attribution with some distance
response to controversy针对涨价质疑,公司回应称,只是调整套餐内容。controversy-response frame
analysis有消费者认为,套餐调整实际上提高了使用成本。opinion/analysis frame

Add punctuation and quote warning

Chinese news often moves between direct quotation, summarized claim, and institutional stance without English-style tense shifting. The reader should mark four things: speaker, verb, claim, and distance. A sentence beginning with 报道称 or 消息称 does not carry the same weight as 报告指出 or 数据显示.
