Concession and Contrast: 虽然, 但是, 不过, 然而, and 反而

The reader can express contrast, concession, correction, and unexpected reversal with appropriate register.

Published January 10, 2026 Chinese

Primary learner problem: Learners use 但是 for every “but,” and miss the difference between accepting a fact, changing direction, making a correction, and reversing expectation.

“But” is too small a category

English “but” covers several discourse moves:

  • It is expensive, but useful.
  • I wanted to go, but I had no time.
  • It is not A, but B.
  • He did not fail; instead, he did better.
  • Even though it rained, we still went.

Mandarin has different tools for these relationships:

RelationshipMandarin toolsCore function
Concession虽然…但是… / 尽管…还是…Accept one fact, assert another more important claim
Simple contrast但是 / 可是 / 不过Change direction or introduce contrast
Formal contrast然而Written, formal contrast
Unexpected reversal反而Opposite of expected result
Correction不是…而是…Not A, but B

The real question is: What kind of contrast are you making?

虽然…但是…: concession

The classic concession pattern is:

虽然 + conceded fact, 但是 + main claim

Examples:

虽然很贵,但是很好用。 Although it is expensive, it is very useful.

虽然他很忙,但是每天都练习中文。 Although he is busy, he practices Chinese every day.

虽然下雨了,但是比赛没有取消。 Although it rained, the match was not canceled.

The first clause is real or accepted. The second clause is the speaker’s main point. In Mandarin, using both 虽然 and 但是 is normal. Do not delete 但是 just because English style avoids “although…but.”

You can also omit one side when the relationship is clear:

虽然很贵,还是值得买。 Although it is expensive, it is still worth buying.

这个很贵,但是质量好。 This is expensive, but the quality is good.

但是, 可是, 不过: three common “but” words

These words overlap, but they differ in feel.

WordCommon feelExample
但是neutral, standard, spoken/written我想去,但是没时间。
可是conversational, sometimes more emotional我想去,可是太远了。
不过softer turn, reservation, afterthought这个不错,不过有点贵。

但是

我想去,但是今天没时间。 I want to go, but I do not have time today.

但是 is the safest general contrast marker.

可是

我也想帮你,可是我真的不会。 I also want to help you, but I really do not know how.

可是 often sounds conversational and can carry a personal or emotional turn.

不过

这个房子挺好,不过离地铁有点远。 This apartment is pretty good, but it is a bit far from the subway.

不过 often introduces a limitation, reservation, or softer contrast. It is useful in polite disagreement:

你的想法有道理,不过我们可能还要考虑成本。 Your idea makes sense, but we may still need to consider cost.

然而: formal written contrast

然而 is common in formal writing, essays, news commentary, and translated prose. It is less common in casual conversation.

这个方法看起来简单,然而实际操作并不容易。 This method looks simple; however, it is not easy in practice.

政策已经实施多年,然而效果仍然有限。 The policy has been implemented for years; however, its effects remain limited.

If you say 然而 in casual speech too often, you may sound bookish. In conversation, 但是, 可是, or 不过 is usually more natural.

反而: reversal of expectation

反而 is not just “but.” It means the result is opposite of what one might expect.

他休息了一天,反而更累了。 He rested for a day, but instead became even more tired.

这个方法看起来麻烦,反而最省时间。 This method looks troublesome, but it actually saves the most time.

我以为他会生气,没想到他反而笑了。 I thought he would get angry; unexpectedly, he laughed instead.

The structure often involves an expectation:

  • If you rest, you should be less tired.
  • If a method is complicated, it should waste time.
  • If someone hears bad news, they might get angry.

反而 marks that reality goes the other way.

Do not use 反而 for ordinary contrast.

Awkward:

?我想去,反而没时间。 Intended: I want to go, but I have no time.

Natural:

我想去,但是没时间。

不是…而是…: correction, not contrast

When you want to correct an identification, use:

不是 A,而是 B not A, but B

Examples:

问题不是价格,而是时间。 The problem is not price, but time.

他不是不想帮你,而是真的没办法。 It is not that he does not want to help you; he really has no way.

这不是语法错误,而是风格问题。 This is not a grammar error, but a style issue.

This is different from 但是. 但是 adds contrast; 不是…而是… replaces one interpretation with another.

Compare:

他想来,但是没时间。 He wants to come, but does not have time.

他不是不想来,而是没时间。 It is not that he does not want to come; rather, he has no time.

The second sentence corrects a possible misunderstanding.

尽管 and 即使: concession neighbors

尽管 is similar to “although/despite,” often more formal than 虽然.

尽管天气不好,活动还是照常举行。 Despite the bad weather, the event was still held as scheduled.

即使 means “even if,” and belongs more to conditional concession:

即使天气不好,活动也会照常举行。 Even if the weather is bad, the event will still be held as scheduled.

Compare:

SentenceMeaning
虽然天气不好,活动还是举行了。The weather was bad, but the event was held. The bad weather is factual.
即使天气不好,活动也会举行。Even if the weather is bad, the event will be held. The bad weather may be hypothetical.

Common learner traps

Trap 1: using 但是 for correction when 而是 is needed

Weak:

?问题不是价格,但是时间。

Natural:

问题不是价格,而是时间。

Trap 2: using 反而 for ordinary “but”

Wrong:

✗ 我想去,反而没有时间。

Natural:

我想去,但是没有时间。

Use 反而 only when the result reverses expectation.

Trap 3: avoiding 虽然…但是 because English dislikes “although…but”

Mandarin accepts:

虽然很累,但是我很开心。

No problem. In fact, this full frame is often clearer for learners.

Trap 4: overusing 然而 in speech

Bookish in casual conversation:

?我想去,然而我没时间。

Natural:

我想去,但是没时间。 我想去,不过没时间。

Editorial notes

This article should link to article 087 on conditionals because 即使 overlaps with concession, and article 088 on causality because contrast and cause often work together in essays and news. Include paragraph-level examples in the final version, not only sentence pairs.
